また会いましょう/See you again

先日ドイツから来た家具職人が自転車旅から帰ってきて、最後の晩餐をしました。

聞けば3週間弱九州を巡り、四国へ行こうとしたが時間の都合上続きはまた次回にしようということでした。

阿蘇やら湯布院やらある程度の観光地は巡り、ほぼテント泊ということでした。日本の自然は美しい、人は親切だしぜひまた戻って来たいとのことでした。

外国人に触発されて日本の美しさに気づくという、普段意識しなかったことを意識させられる良い経験にもなりましたし、国際交流は良いものだと改めて思いました。今後もこういった交流を積極的にやっていこうと思いました。

ドイツの職人は地位が高く、その上マイスター制度という資格もあるぐらいなので、木工業界にも細かいルールがたくさんあるといいます。そのうちの一つに昇降盤のノコの出る部分（刃口）から12.5cm以内に手を近づけてはいけないルールがあるそうです。しかしそんなことは言ってられない場面はたくさんあるはずなのは百も承知。臨機応変にやってるみたいです。あと機械の安全装置（カバー）は必須、イヤーマフ等、日本では怠りがちなことはドイツでは普通です。どんな接着剤を使っているとか、仕上げの話とか、そんな木工の小話も聞けてとても充実した交流でした。

彼はハノーファー出身で、2021年にハノーファーで木工所をボスと立ち上げ、現在は彼が工場を回しているとそうです。まだ若いのにすごい。

今度はハノーファーで会いましょうと言い日本をあとにしました。必ずお伺いしますと。

今後の楽しみが一つ増えました。

A furniture maker from Germany recently returned from his cycling trip, and we had a farewell dinner together.

He told me he had spent nearly three weeks touring Kyushu and had planned to go to Shikoku, but due to time constraints, he decided to postpone the rest of his trip until next time.

He had visited some tourist spots like Aso and Yufuin, and mostly camped in a tent. He said that Japan's nature is beautiful, the people are kind, and he definitely wants to come back.

It was a good experience for me to be inspired by a foreigner to realize the beauty of Japan, something I don't usually pay attention to, and it reaffirmed my belief in the value of international exchange. I intend to actively pursue these kinds of exchanges in the future.

German craftsmen hold high status, and there's even a Meister (master craftsman) system, so the woodworking industry has many detailed rules. One of them is that you shouldn't get your hand within 12.5 cm of the blade opening of a table saw. However, I'm well aware that there are many situations where you can't be so strict. It seems they're quite flexible. Also, safety devices (covers) on machinery are mandatory, and things like earmuffs, which are often neglected in Japan, are commonplace in Germany. I was able to hear interesting anecdotes about woodworking, such as what kind of adhesives they use and finishing techniques, making for a very fulfilling exchange.

He's from Hanover, and in 2021 he and his boss started a woodworking shop in Hanover, and he's currently running the factory himself. He's so young, yet so accomplished.

We said we'd meet again in Hanover before I left Japan. I promised to visit.

I now have one more thing to look forward to.
